Bettembourg Continuous Care Centre : a success story
![]() | By winning the international call for tenders launched in 1992 by the Ministry of Health of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, Sodexo showed its capacity for innovation in improving the quality of daily life of elderly persons and their families as well as the medical and paramedical corps. |
Partnering the Centre's original therapeutic approach and the pleasant living conditions, Sodexo has been able to give expression to and implement the conviction of everyone at Bettembourg that activity helps maintain the autonomy of people who are dependent.
A conviction based on the concept of managed care: active social life ensures longer autonomy.
The residents are encouraged to participate fully in the community life by joining various groups: writing a house bulletin, choosing events, giving their opinions on menus and food services, preparing celebrations, memory stimulation through conversation groups and tales of their travels, etc.
Each event is coordinated and supervised by a sociotherapist.
The lay-out and organisation of the centre are styled to ensure the privacy and freedom of the elderly person as an individual: doorbell and nameplate on each door, individual mail boxes, unlimited visits for family and friends with possibility for overnight stay in guest rooms.
The attitude of the staff also reflects this concept of care: 'being at the service of the residents', not 'being responsible for taking care of'. Each staff member realises that they are not there merely to satisfy physical needs but also to attend to the quality of the resident's life in each unit (24 people to a unit) of the Maison de Soins ('house of care').
The residents' quality of life
Morning
The residents get up at different times, according to a staggered, accommodating schedule. With the help of the nursing aids, they get washed and dressed, and then have breakfast in their room or in the sitting room. A simple activity is proposed in each unit.

Afternoon
The afternoon is filled with visits, inter-unit activities, physical therapy and healthcare programmes. At least one of the activities is designed for the most unfocused residents.
Going to bed
As in the morning, the schedule for going to bed is staggered as much as possible.
Night
There are 2 nurses supported by 4 nursing aids on duty all night : one person is on watch in each of the 6 living units.
Sodexo and the Luxembourg Ministry of Health have signed two 20-year contracts:
Rent-purchase contract, signed in 1992
Sodexo prefinanced 27 million euros of the project, and the State is responsible for reimbursements.
